Budapest to Venice – Day Twenty Six

Thursday September 26 – Another travel day. Budapest has been great, but it definitely feels like it’s slowly recovering from its post-war past. It would be really interesting to see what it will looks like in ten or twenty years.

Szent Anna Templom / St Anna’s Church was a baroque church next door to our hotel.

Bye Bye Budapest

We caught the tram to the airport from town.

The former eastern block sure loved grim looking architecture.
Bye Hungary.

Venice

Most of the trip had been pretty straightforward planning wise, most of the distances meant that they were either a two or four hour train journey apart. Amsterdam to Copenhagen was over eight hours by train, so flying was an easy choice.

Similarly getting to Venice from Budapest meant crossing the Alps at some point. The most direct route would have been an eleven hour bus ride through Slovenia. If Czech rail was anything to go by this would been a fairly spartan experience. We decided to fly.

Hello Venice.
Our chariot. We had previously looked at catching the bus into Venice. Flying in we noticed the water-taxi’s, which looked much more interesting & appropriate mode of transport considering our surroundings. What we hadn’t anticipated was the highly causal approach to storing our luggage, which seemingly threatened to fall into the lagoon at any moment.
Sailing into Venice. Luggage intact.
Navigating the laneways. We got dropped off at the north of Cannaregio. It was slightly unreal as there was hardly anybody around. Google Maps really was a godsend.
Classic Venice.
Just parked it outside.
Gluten. After dropping off our bags we found a restaurant by a nearby canal. This pasta was amazing.
