Vienna – Day Twenty Three

Monday September 23 – Val again very generously acted as our tour guide. The plan for the day is to head into the hills above Vienna. Firstly we have a walk to the car, unlike Auckland or the rest of NZ for that matter, where the idea of not being able to park outside exactly where you might want to go is inexplicable. In Vienna there are very heavy fines if you park in an area outside the part of town you have a permit for. So we have a short walk to car, where we pass some more interesting places.

Boo. On the way we see everyone’s favourite cartel, OPEC. Boo.
Val on the way to the car, took us to her favourite plant shop & she goes there every year for her birthday.
King’s Plant Barn really needs to up their game. The plant shop & cafe are in a former palace.

Grinzing

Despite sounding like some sort of dental procedure, Grinzing is a stunning wine making region in the hills of Vienna, where Val took us to have lunch.

Very ‘sound of music’ vibes.

Heading back

After having a very pleasant lunch & stopping for a coffee, Val drove us back to town.

The Spittelau Incinerator by the Viennese artist & architect Hundertwasser. He moved to NZ in the 1970s. Like Emperor Franz Joseph he also wasn’t a fan of Adolf Loos.
More Hundertwasser he wasn’t keen on straight lines.
Spittelau Apartments by the architect Zaha Hadid
Beethoven lived there. The street also features in Orson Welles ‘The Third Man’.
This chapel in the Harrach Palace was closed up & forgotten about until relatively recently.

Cafe Central

Val & Harold surprise us & take us to Cafe Central. This is another Viennese institution & had some luminary regulars such as Freud & Trotsky.

There was an impressive queue to get in.
The cafe is stunning.
The pastries were stunning.
I chose the Cafe Central cake. It was stunning.
The team, stunning.

Cafe Central was pretty special, and definitely well worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood.

Vienna

We leave Cafe Central and head to our hotel via the Hofburg Palace.

It’s that way.
