Copenhagen – Day Fifteen

Sunday September 15 –

Changing of the Guards.

We headed out to explore Copenhagen and we walked back through Amalienborg Palace. We happen to see the changing of the guards. Not quite the pomp or scale of Buckingham Palace’s, but you can get much closer.

Changing.
They’re Off.
More Frederik’s Church

Half Marathon

Part of our exploration was to find breakfast. We’d found a good little supermarket where you can pick up breakfast supplies. However, it was the morning of the Copenhagen half marathon, so crossing the road to it proved too difficult.

Not getting across. Runners in front of the Russian Orthodox Church

Design Museum of Denmark

Luckily we found a cafe at the Design Museum that was nearby where we could find something to eat. Bread & cream-cheese seems to bit of specialty of the Danes. We head into the museum, which is excellent.

Contemporary Viking couture.
Big chair
Poul Henningsen Artichoke Lamp, was interesting to hear his design process, and how different types of lightbulbs causes design changes.
True.
Smile.
The garden was great too

Smørrebrød

While we’re here we’re keen to have a Danish smørrebrød or open sandwich.

They were good

Christainshavn

After lunch we cross the harbour to Christainshavn. This has pretty amazing contemporary architecture, and has a cool market where you pick up good food.

Inderhavnsbroen / Inner Habour Bridge
From the bridge, the black building is the Royal Danish Theatre; the Opera house is in the distance.
Cool contemporary architecture

The Black Diamond & Blox

From Christainshavn we make our way to the Architecture museum. Being late in a Sunday the public library, nicknamed the black diamond, was closed. We head to Blox the building next door that houses the Danish Architectural Centre

The Black Diamond is on the left, by Schmidt Hammer Lassen architects.
Blox houses the Danish Architecture Centre by OMA architects.
The Centre has a four storey slide by artist Carsten Höller

Christiansborg Palace

Marnie & I are big Scandi drama fans. If you haven’t seen Borgen, it follows a fictionalised version of Danish politics centred on the Danish parliament at Christiansborg Palace. So it was pretty cool to walk around.

They released pigeons for us.

Copenhagen at night

We went for an evening stroll

The Admiral Hotel, where we stayed
Nyhavn at night

Walked 15.8km / 22929 steps
