Amsterdam- Day Twelve

Thursday September 12

Rijksmuseum

Sanne recommended that the Rijksmuseum is well worth seeing so we head there from our hotel. There’s some amazing art on display.

View of the canals from Herengracht on the way to Rijksmuseum.
More wonky houses.
Heineken Brewery. We didn’t go in. It might have been 11am but it’s 5’o clock somewhere.
Us at the Rijksmuseum.
Cultured pooch waiting at the Rijksmuseum.
Van Gogh with ear attached.
Louis Napoleon, the brother of Napoleon, was the first King of the Netherlands. Who knew?
Rembrandt’s Night Watchmen. It’s behind glass in a special room.
It’s already been in restoration for five years removing vanish and has at least another two years to go.
Rembrandt himself.
Rijksmuseum gardens were great too.
Space invader in Amsterdam? We saw our first bicycle crash here. Thankfully no one was hurt. You definitely need to keep an eye out for bikes, we started calling them silent death.

Wandering around Amsterdam

It’s amazing how much time you can spend in a gallery/museum like the Rijksmuseum. We hunt down lunch afterwards by a canal in Prinsengracht.

Lunch was great and it had a pretty good view too.
Not ugly.

We wander back to the De Dam

Rokin not ugly.
Okay this is totally archi-geeky & possibly highly dull. It’s a bit hard to work out from this photo but what you looking at is the top step of the upper house, and the door into the lower apartment. The higher your front door was showed how fancy you were. This is a Dutch upstairs/downstairs if you will. I quite like the small gutter detail that deflects the rain from the lower apartment. Again apologies.
Girl with a Pearl Earring… & Ray-bans. Vermeer advertising for optometrist.
We definitely enjoyed exploring the little lanes.
I have finally found shoes that fit!
De Dam, the Royal Palace, Nieuw Kerk is on the right. De Dam is a square now, but originally was literally a dam on the Amstel river. It’s also how Amsterdam got its name.
Amsterdam Central Station. Thanks to Wikipedia the station was completed in 1889 & was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. You definitely can see a similarity.
Scheepvaarthuis – wasn’t far from our hotel. It was a shipping house & now a hotel. Turns out this is regularly regarded in the top 100 Dutch buildings.
It has all sorts of crazy details.
0% Trappist Belgium Beers in low alcohol section at the local store.
A busload of visitors had arrived so we take the stairs to our room. The tread is tiny as shown by my foot. They’re fire stairs, which isn’t too reassuring. Auckland Council would be in spasms if they saw this.

Walked 14.9km / 18848 steps

  1. Those stairs! More like a ladder really. Not to bad going up but going down would be “interesting”. Another great blog 🙂
